| Some Information for the Association of Scotland |
| The Association was set up at the
instigation of an ICD user who had lived in the USA and had experienced the
support system there. We began informally in 1992 and have developed to our present form over years. As well as the , "new Patient Packs" ( a letter, four of out leaflet and a copy of our newsletter) and newsletter, we also offer help over the phone or by visiting. In particular we often asked to talk to patients in hospital before or after fitting. As the program in Glasgow has been underway since 1988 we have a fair range of folk with differing diagnoses leading to ICD, including one girl who has successfully delivered a daughter ( after she had her implant). Thus we can usually tailor the advising member to the patient concerned. We also hold meetings at which we get speakers on relevant subjects, and tuition in CPR for patients and relatives. By far the most useful bit of these meetings is the informal sessions where experiences can be compared, a good old moan indulged and personal contact are can help with problems. We have geographical and transport problems so meetings are restricted to one national per year and a variable number of local ones. Finally we run a scheme where we help with the monthly rental mobile phones as many of us find them a comfort to have in case we need to summon help. Phones also help our relatives let us get out on our own and give us confidence to get independent. Full membership of IDAS is limited to folk in Scotland. Fees are £10 per family per year. We do have some associate members in England, at £5 per year, but they are not entitled to be part of the phone scheme. Please contact Peter Slater for more information. |
