With so much hatred and violence in this world today, stories of true human kindness have become hard to find. This letter is about an act of human kindness that has touched our family's heart and confirms that there are still people in this world who are filled with kindness and unselfishness. Quite possibly it may inspire others to do the same. The person responsible for this act of kindness lives in Englewood, Colorado. and my family is hundreds of miles away in Wisconsin. My 10-year-old son Andrew has a congenital heart condition that has
no cure. He was diagnosed in 1995 with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and has been
in an ongoing battle ever since. In 1996 at the age of 6, Andrew had open-heart
surgery to temporarily improve his symptoms. There is no cure for his
condition, only palliative treatments. His disease is progressive and at some
point in his future he will probably need a heart transplant. Those with
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy are at high risk for sudden death, so in 1999 at
the age of 9, Andrew had an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD)
surgically implanted. Following my son's defibrillator implant I searched on
the Internet for more information about ICDs. During my search I found an
online support forum for those who have an ICD implant or have a loved one with
an ICD. Here is where the story of human kindness begins. Through this forum I
began to communicate via the Internet with a man named Steve Keul, from
Englewood, CO, whom also had an ICD implanted. The reasons for Steve's implant
were due to electrical imbalances in his heart, not due to severe disease and
defects such as my son's. I have a web site about our son and his battle
against Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. After visiting my web site Steve was very
touched by my son's story and wanted to do something to bring some happiness
into my son's life. He had read that my son is a huge Green Bay Packer fan and
he immediately new what he wanted to do. Steve currently lives in Colorado, but
is formerly from Wisconsin and is a Green Bay Packer fan to this day. Steve
also is a season ticket holder of the Green Bay Packers. After reading and
seeing pictures on my web site about the work I had done to get a proclamation
signed by Governor Thompson to proclaim February 14th Congenital Heart Defect
and Disease Awareness Day in Wisconsin, he was convinced our son's story was
true. Steve contacted me via email and informed me he would like to do
something special for our family. He told me he wanted to do this for our son
to bring some happiness to his life and put a smile on his face. Steve wanted
to give us tickets to a Green Bay Packer game! His letter brought me to tears.
The thought of a complete stranger wanting to do something like this for our
son touched my heart in a way nothing ever has before. There was only one small
problem that Steve was concerned about. He only had three tickets and we are a
family of 4. I was not concerned about this at all! I assured him it would not
be a problem. Both our sons would go to the game and my husband or myself would
watch from a nearby TV. It would still be exciting to be in Green Bay on game
day! Having convinced Steve that this would still be a special day for ALL of
us, plans started being made. My son was allowed to choose whichever game he
wanted to go to. After deciding on a game, all that was left to do was await
the tickets. At this point it would be a few months before Steve would actually
receive the tickets and then mail them on to us. During this wait I received an
email from Steve with news of yet another act of pure human kindness! Steve has
a life long friend by the name of Tim who lives in Wisconsin. This friend had
flown out to Colorado to spend a week with Steve and his family. During dinner
one night Steve was telling Tim about Andrew, what he has been through in the
past, what he struggles with every day and what he faces in the future. He went
on to say he desperately wanted to do something for Andrew to give him
something positive to look forward to. Steve told Tim about the tickets he was
going to send to our family so Andrew could get to a Green Bay Packer game. He
then went on to say that he only had three tickets and we have four members to
our family. He was expressing how bad he felt that he didn't have that fourth
ticket, when his friend said "Well you do now!" You see, Steve's
friend Tim is also a season ticket holder. He holds two tickets per game. He
also wanted to join in on this act of caring and kindness and has donated one
of his tickets to our family so we all can attend the game! I again was brought
to tears while reading this email. We had now been touched deeply by two people
we had never met! I never had a doubt in my mind that Steve was going to carry
through with this. However, my sons were a bit reserved in their excitement.
After all, this is a man we had never met personally and have only communicated
with via email! In August, just as promised, we received four tickets to the
Packers vs. 49er's game in Green Bay on October 15th. The smile on Andrew's
face when he saw the tickets was priceless! A smile we haven't seen in years. I
would like Steve to know how very much this means to our family. I could not
think of any way I could ever re-pay him for what he has done for our family
and especially Andrew. Then I thought the one way I could re-pay him would be
to share this story and possibly give others the inspiration to do an act of
human kindness. It is my hope that some day I will be able to bring such joy
and happiness to another person. When that opportunity arises, I will thank
Steve for helping to make this world a better place and inspiring me to pass on
an act of pure human kindness. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I
truly hope you choose to share this inspiring story with your readers. Please
contact me if you would like further information. Sincerely, Dolly Lee Wheeler,
